NEWMAP Delegation Visits Efon Local Government to Assess Road Damage

A delegation from the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) recently visited Efon Local Government in Ekiti State to inspect the deplorable condition of roads in the area, including the Ibete road in Ejigan Quarters. The visit aimed to assess the damage and solicit community cooperation with contractors working on the project.

The delegation was accompanied by key officials, including the Efon Local Government Executive Chairman, Hon. Segun Afolabi; Technical Advisor on Local Government to the Governor of Ekiti State, Engr. Stephen Olabode; and Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Julius Babatope.

According to the NEWMAP Project Coordinator, the team assured that affected houses or buildings would receive compensation. Hon. Ayodele Kayode Abiodun, the Honorable Councillor representing the ward, thanked the delegation for their visit, highlighting the road’s condition impact on Efon’s economic and developmental progress.

The NEWMAP initiative, supported by the World Bank, aims to reduce vulnerability to soil erosion in targeted sub-watersheds. The project has provided livelihood enhancement activities to over 9,230 households and demonstrated proof of concept in gully remediation and watershed management.

The Efon Local Government officials have requested federal government intervention to address the urgent need for attention to the area’s infrastructure. The NEWMAP Project Coordinator assured that with community cooperation, a satisfactory job would be done. This development is a step towards improving the lives of residents in Efon Local Government and promoting economic growth in the region.
