Former Senator Ayodele Arise has commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for investing in drone technology and digital infrastructure to combat insecurity and boost national development. Speaking on Arise Television’s live program, The Morning Show, Arise noted that Nigeria’s investment in drones will enhance security by tracking down culprits and reducing their hiding places. According to him, technology is being deployed to assist in the security architecture of the country’s defence, and it’s already yielding positive results.
Beyond security, Arise highlighted the Federal Government’s efforts in leveraging Information and Communication Technology, particularly in administering social safety nets and data-driven governance. He cited the National Identity Numbers as a tool that has made it easier to identify beneficiaries and track government disbursements.
The former lawmaker also pointed out the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy’s initiatives, where thousands of youths are being trained in app development, software engineering, and digital entrepreneurship, with many working remotely and earning in foreign currency.
Arise emphasized the need for policies that encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, drawing parallels with the United States, where small businesses drive the economy. As a former chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation, he urged the National Assembly to support local technology operators by initiating enabling legislation, such as laws that mandate the approval of ICT licences within 90 days of application and policies that promote local production of tech hardware.
The APC chieftain concluded that strategic legislation and executive action can help Nigeria become a hub of digital excellence, driving the tech industry forward and creating a viable ecosystem for innovation and self-sufficiency.
