The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced a nationwide medical strike effective Thursday, July 24, 2025, after the 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government expired without meeting the doctors’ demands.
The NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, stated that the controversial circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, which revises allowances for medical and dental officers, was issued without consultation and undermines existing agreements.
The NMA emphasized that failure to resolve the issue would leave no option other than industrial action. Despite efforts to reach a resolution, including meetings with the Minister of Health, Minister of State, and representatives from the Ministry of Finance and the NSIWC, the issue remains unresolved. A subsequent meeting aimed at addressing the demands was delayed due to the national mourning following former President Buhari’s death.
The planned strike threatens to halt essential health services across the country, heightening concerns amid ongoing brain drain and dwindling healthcare resources. Several states, including Kogi, Katsina, Ekiti, and Ondo, had previously experienced warning strikes by doctors’ associations over the same salary circular, and signaling a broader wave of discontent within Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
The NMA has stressed that unless dialogue resumes promptly, the strike would proceed as scheduled, further exacerbating the country’s healthcare challenges.
