ASUP Issues 21-Day Ultimatum, Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Unresolved Polytechnic Issues

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, warning that failure to address critical concerns could trigger a nationwide strike.

Speaking at a press briefing in Bauchi, Zonal Coordinator Innocent Simji emphasised that this call aligns with resolutions from ASUP’s national headquarters following an emergency National Executive Council meeting on August 14 in Abuja.

The union cited a litany of grievances including unpaid academic allowances, salary arrears, lack of dual mandate structure between polytechnic and university graduates, delays in infrastructure funding, and unwarranted outsourcing of the National Board for Technical Education’s quality assurance functions.

Additionally, ASUP decried the absence of a dedicated commission for polytechnics, stalled promotion arrears, and interference in union activities, particularly citing problems at the Federal Polytechnic Nekede.

Simji warned that with no progress made and the Federal Ministry of Education’s refusal to engage in sincere dialogue, the union will declare a trade dispute and withdraw services nationwide if demands remain unmet after the ultimatum expires.

The sector now faces uncertainty as stakeholders anticipate the government’s response to avoid disruption.
