Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, has made a significant move to strengthen the education sector by extending the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years and increasing the maximum years of service from 35 to 40 years.
The announcement came during the vibrant 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion, Ado Ekiti, where over 5,000 teachers gathered, dressed in colourful Ankara attire, to celebrate their profession.
Alongside the retirement age extension, Governor Oyebanji presented a total of N46 million in cash awards to outstanding teachers, reviewed upward allowances for Science Teachers and Heads of Departments, and authorised immediate payment of the 2019 leave bonus arrears, all aimed at boosting teacher morale and welfare.
Governor Oyebanji hailed teachers as the foundation of the state’s future and acknowledged their invaluable contributions to Ekiti’s growth and development.
He emphasised that these initiatives form part of his administration’s broader shared prosperity agenda, designed to motivate teachers and retain experienced professionals within the education sector. To ensure the benefits of the extended service years go to capable individuals, a committee will be established to oversee this new policy.
The event also attracted key government officials, including Deputy Governor Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, Speaker of the State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, Secretary to the State Government Prof. Habibat Adubiaro, Head of Service Dr (Mrs) Folakemi Olomojobi, Chief of Staff Mr Oyeniyi Adebayo, and members of the State Executive Council, marking it as a major milestone in Ekiti’s education landscape.
