How EPC moulded me into total teacher – Ekiti State first Tutor-General, at 80

Prince Bayo Adeniran, the beloved former English teacher and first Tutor-General of Ekiti State, recently celebrated his 80th birthday with a rich reflection on his journey from student to educator at Ekiti Parapo College (EPC), Ido-Ekiti.

Adeniran, who first attended EPC in 1968/69 before advancing to the University of Ibadan, returned to teach at his alma mater after graduation in 1972, dedicating eight years to shaping young minds with academic rigour and discipline. Known affectionately as ‘Oga Bayo,’ he recounted how the discipline and commitment fostered at EPC, alongside his passion for drama and literature, helped build a strong foundation for his successful career, which included principal roles at five schools and chairmanship of the Ekiti State Teaching Service Commission. 

Adeniran fondly remembered his days as a senior prefect and Games Captain, praising the school’s high standards of academics and discipline that produced outstanding HSC results, with many pupils gaining university admission.

His pioneering drama productions, notably the play *Kiriji*, showcased his dedication to developing students’ confidence and public speaking skills, blending literature with performance to leave a lasting impact. He spoke candidly about the firm but fair approach that earned him respect among students, emphasising justice in marking and discipline without malice. 

Reflecting on the evolution of schooling, Adeniran expressed concern at current student attitudes towards hard work and discipline, urging today’s students to prioritise diligence and respect for teachers.

He also called on alumni to support EPC morally and financially, reminding them of their debt to the institution that helped shape their futures. In retirement since 2007, Adeniran enjoys a comfortable life surrounded by family and the respect of the community, crediting his wife and former students for their unwavering support, especially during recent health challenges.

For this eminent educator, Ekiti Parapo College remains a cherished launchpad that moulded him into a total teacher, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
