Landowners from Okelawe in Iyin Ekiti have staged a protest, carrying placards and appealing to President Tinubu and Ekiti State Governor, H.E Biodun Oyebanji, to intervene in the forceful acquisition of their lands. The families claim that after surrendering 230 hectares for a federal university, authorities are now seeking to take over the remaining 10 hectares, their last piece of land.
They accuse the King of Iyin Ekiti, Kabiesi Oluyin of Iyin Ekiti, HRM. Adeniyi Ajakaye, and Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele of orchestrating the move. The families, who were not compensated for the initial land acquisition, are worried they will be rendered landless and are calling for the Federal Government and state governor to step in.
The land in question has crops such as cocoa, kolanut trees, and yams, which were destroyed without allowing the owners to harvest them, with military personnel reportedly used to scare off the owners during land clearing.
