Ekiti Government Refutes Claims of Funding Governor Oyebanji’s Abuja Trip

The Ekiti State Government has firmly dismissed rumours suggesting that public funds were used to finance the recent trip to Abuja by Governor Biodun Oyebanji and a large contingent of supporters as he submitted his nomination and expression of interest forms for the 2026 governorship election. The government clarified that the journey, which saw an unprecedented turnout of state and national leaders, elected officials, and key stakeholders, was entirely self-funded by the individuals and groups involved.

Speaking during a live radio broadcast in Ado-Ekiti, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information, Mr Taiwo Olatunbosun, and the Chief Press Secretary, Mr Yinka Oyebode, emphasised that no expenditure was borne by the state government. Instead, the massive show of support was a voluntary demonstration of loyalty, with many groups explicitly endorsing Governor Oyebanji’s bid for a second term. Among these was the Ekiti State University Alumni Association, which contributed financially to secure the governor’s primary election ticket.

“It was like moving the entire Ekiti,” remarked the officials, underlining the scale of the event and framing it as a testimony to Ekiti’s growing political influence and the widespread respect Governor Oyebanji commands nationwide. The trip, they noted, was not just about political theatre but also about reaffirming the governor’s strong track record.

Mr Oyebode highlighted several achievements of the current administration, including significant advancements in the education sector. The government’s commitment to providing free, quality education has led to increased student enrolment over the last three years. He also stressed the governor’s insistence that no project is commissioned until it is fully completed, ensuring value and sustainability.

The officials further pointed out the administration’s focus on the wellness of the people, reflected in a comprehensive agricultural transformation programme. Inspired by Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s farm settlements, Governor Oyebanji’s agricultural initiative has expanded dramatically—from 1,000 participants last year to 5,000 this year—with investments exceeding ₦200 million. Farmers benefit from state-backed support that includes equipment, seedlings, land clearing, and market access.

Infrastructure development continues to be a hallmark of the government’s achievements, with notable projects such as the construction of ring roads, upgrades to the famed Ikogosi Warm Springs resort, and the completion of 38 roads across all senatorial districts. There have also been improvements in power supply, including the provision of new transformers.

The officials convincingly argued that the governor’s re-election bid is not merely a political contest but a vital step towards continuing the visionary leadership that has already begun to deliver tangible dividends. Remarkably, even former governors and opposition figures have commended the administration’s resourcefulness and inclusive governance approach.

As the political atmosphere heats up ahead of the 2026 elections, the Ekiti State Government’s clarifications aim to put to rest any doubts about the integrity of Governor Oyebanji’s political campaign activities, firmly positioning the administration as a beacon of progress and unity in the region.
